ARIADNETechNat-Mentoring, fall 2011

ARIADNETechNat is an initiative project for the female students and doctoral candidates of the faculty of engineering and science who are seeking promotion at their studies and careers.

The program is leaded by a scientist or an academic adviser as a mentor to support the mentee in various areas such as career-related soft skills, job meetings and etc.

Funding of active participation in conferences and training schools

As a talented student / PhD student / postdoc, you have the possibility of financial funding of your participation in interesting lectures or conferences and in training programs (summer schools, autumn schools).

Funding is provided for active participation in the form of a separate presentation or poster on the results of research for SAOT students and passive participation for MAOT students.

The height of the travel grant was established faculty-specific and depends under given conditions by destination (domestic vs. Abroad) and by status of the applicant (student / faculty staff / fellow).

List of necessary documents:

  1. Cover letter & Motivation
  2. Business Trip Application Form
  3. Curriculum vitae
  4. Statement of approximate costs e.g. hotel, ticket, conference fee and etc.
  5. Description of the conference
  6. Recommendation letter from the supervisor
  7. Confirmation from your supervisor  whether the research group provides additional funding of the trip
  8. Publication list (only SAOT)

Scholarships for female phd students/researchers

Regarding to the program, “support the Equal opportunities for women in research and teaching”, qualified PhD students and postdoc researchers can apply for a 12 month scholarship.

This scholarship program is also can be a good choice for the young scientists who have to leave their academic projects temporary due to some special cases such as maternity leave.

The amount of the scholarship is 1200  € per month for PhD students, 2,000 € for post-doctoral researchers, 2,200 € for habilitations and 2400 € for the excellent young scientists. The amount of the scholarship re-depends on the particular qualification.

In addition, young scientists every level, the interrupted due to parental leave her academic project have to apply for such a regrant.

"To-do" list for different conference trips

  1. Registeration, filling forms and sending your talk/poster abstracts
  2. Getting the visa if it's necessary
  3. Booking hotels and tickets; finding the location of the conference and hotel using conference website
  4. Gathering the information about the culture and sightseeings of the conference place
  5. Checking transportation and time tables
  6. Being sure about currency exchange
  7. Printing out several copies of your current poster (A4 format) and your previous researches to exchange with people
  8. Formal registeration which include paying fees, getting book of abstract, conference program
  9. Checking time and date of your presentation
  10. Choosing the most interesting talks you would like to attend and enjoy conference!

Child-Care Centers and family service

Child or career? Such a question should actually never arise for students and professionals.

Yes, women often face this question. Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nurnberg provide support to its female staff and to its female students who combine an academic career with  raising a family. You will find on our homepage useful information and links for various support schemes and consulting services. The university has its own contingent of daycare centers for children of university staff.

Moreover, the university is committed to establishing a daycare center for the students’ children.

“Girls+Engineering“ Training

The aim of this training week is to spark the interest of female high school students (8th to 13th grade) in science and engineering by offering fascinating practical courses at various departments of the School of Engineering. The project has proven to be very popular over many years. This was also confirmed in an evaluation by a Social Science Research Team in 2003.

Girls’ Day

Companies and institutes in Germany open their doors for school girls (up to 5th grade) every year on the 4th Thursday in April. The daughters and friends of the staff of the School of Engineering are invited to gain an insight into working life. For This purpose, the Departments of the School of Engineering open their laboratories. Workshops give examples that show the girls how interesting and exciting this work can be. Employees are personally available for discussions.
